Applied Games Design

As part of my 4th year I had the opportunity to work in a team to develop a series of applied games, these all posed their own unique design challenges that I had to take into consideration when designing.

Starvin’ Seagulls

Starving Seagull’s is a public play installation game for Whale Song Park, inspired by the local experience of seagulls stealing food. Players take on the role of citizens enjoying lunch by the waterfront, while avoiding seagulls and their droppings. They can use a water gun to fend off the birds.

The game features simple mechanics that cater to a wide audience, accommodating various ages and reading abilities, and encourages both collaborative and flexible play durations.

My Role

Due to a short 3-week development time, I assumed a hybrid Production and Design role, focusing on streamlining the development pipelines and defining the game’s core mechanics and features into tasks. Collaborating closely with the design team, I effectively scoped the project and utilized Trello for its quick setup, aligning well with the team’s Game Jam approach.

Rowdy Rulers

Rowdy Rulers was a brief assigned to our team by Dissent Games to create a political board game surrounding First Past the Post voting systems.

The game is an improv party game designed to showcase how the Borda count can be used as an alternate voting system.

My Role

As the producer, I ensured the timely delivery of the prototype by supporting the design team, identifying challenges, and providing clear direction. I facilitated communication across team-members, organized check-ins, and offered resources and feedback, resulting in a cohesive final product.
